What should a face cream for oily skin meet?
If you have oily skin, you probably recognise it immediately: a shiny T-zone, make-up that doesn't stay on properly, and occasional blemishes that you really don't want. Perhaps you have already tried everything - or nothing at all, for fear that a cream will make your skin even oilier.
But especially if you have oily skin, it is important to use the right face cream. And it should satisfy a few important things. In this article, I tell you exactly what to look out for. No complicated lists of ingredients or vague promises - just a clear explanation so that you can choose the cream that suits your skin.
Why oily skin still needs care
Many women with oily skin skip their day cream because they think their skin is 'already oily enough'. But sebum (oil) is not the same as hydration (moisture). And without sufficient hydration, your skin becomes unbalanced - which often causes it to produce more sebum to compensate.
The result? More shine, more blemishes, and unbalanced skin. A good cream actually helps restore that balance.
This is what a face cream for oily skin really needs to meet
1. Light, oil-free texture
Above all, a cream for oily skin should not be too heavy. Consider a gel or a fluid - something that absorbs quickly and does not leave a greasy film. Avoid creams with thick oils like coconut oil or mineral oil.
2. Non-comedogenic
That means the cream does not clog pores. It sounds technical, but it is often clearly stated on the packaging. No clogging means less chance of blackheads and pimples.
3. Moisturising without heaviness
Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerine are perfect: they bring moisture into the skin without 'weight'. They help keep skin supple without feeling greasy.
4. Regulating and calming
Look for creams with niacinamide, zinc, or for example green tea extract. These ingredients help regulate sebum production and calm inflammation.
5. Free of irritants
Avoid creams with a lot of perfume, alcohol (such as alcohol denat.), or silicones that can close off the skin. Especially in sensitive, oily skin, these ingredients can actually worsen symptoms.
Extra care tips for oily skin
Besides a good cream, it can also help to:
a mild facial cleanser to use (not too aggressive), the facial cleanser with sage and tea tree by Evergetikon is possibly a good option
Exfoliate once or twice a week with salicylic acid (BHA),
during the day a mattifying SPF wear.
And it may sound logical, but it also helps to drink plenty of water and leave your skin alone if you feel an impurity coming on.
In conclusion
Oily skin is not a problem to be 'solved', but a skin type that requires the right approach. The right face cream can really make a difference. Not only for how your skin looks, but also for how it feels - balanced, fresh and cared for.
